Music Issue Update: Issue 2.5

This week, the Mycelium team is working hard to review the last batch of submissions for the music themed issue. We have only about eight submissions left to review, and then we will dive right into the design process! We have a set goal in mind for a publication date, but we are still discussing which phase of the moon would best suit the birth of Issue 2.5. The next full moon is fast approaching, but each phase has a unique and powerful energy. We are continuing the tradition that was set with Issue 2 in choosing our deadlines and publication dates according to lunar knowledge, as the Editor in Chief and author of this blog post has a deep connection with the moon, strengthened by their agricultural roots.

Issue 2.5 so far, after reviewing the first batch of submissions, features album reviews, song reviews, poems, prose, nonfiction, and ekphrasis, all of which are connected along the theme of music. The original idea for the issue was to give writers and creatives a space to talk about the music that saved them during the early and ongoing phases of the pandemic. Whether it be sad songs on repeat or old songs reigniting a flame, I learned from reviewing the Issue 2.5 submissions that music is important, life giving, sustaining. That’s why the team decided to call this project Issue 2.5, a sub-issue of our second main anthology, which was on the theme of Sustainability.

Since early 2020, I’ve been all over the place musically. I reconnected with my roots with a $10 vinyl of Adam and the Ants’ Kings of the Wild Frontier, kept an ongoing flame alive with Aesop Rock’s Spirit World Field Guide spinning translucently, and discovered a new life long love with Sung Tongs by Animal Collective. It was Spirit World Field Guide that truly inspired the idea for this issue, as it felt like the album had been written so specifically for me, my interests, my synchronicities. As I searched endlessly for a place to submit an album review, I came to realize how difficult it is to get writing about music out into the world. I wanted to provide a space to do just that. So issue 2.5 was conceived and soon will be born.
